Darren Sanders in Blood Work (A work in progress)
Funhaus Factory
What happens when a comedian is diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening blood cancer? For Darren Sanders, it's a story he never expected to tell, and one he's still trying to work out the ending to.
After more than 30 years making audiences laugh, Darren suddenly found himself swapping the stage for a hospital bed, comedy clubs for chemo, and punchlines for blood tests, treatment and a future that wasn't quite as certain as it once seemed.
In Blood Work, Darren takes audiences on a candid, honest and darkly funny journey through his diagnosis with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APML), the treatment that followed and the strange reality of living with uncertainty.
Combining brand-new material drawn from his ongoing experience with tried-and-tested comedy favourites, this work-in-progress show explores the absurdities of hospital life, the people who helped him through the darkest moments, and what happens when life suddenly takes an unexpected turn.
There are laughs to be found in the most unlikely places, even when you don't quite know what's coming next.
The treatment is ongoing. The future is uncertain. But the jokes keep coming.
"Highly Entertaining"- Daily Telegraph
"Sanders has a relaxed and confident style that allows the audience to forget his jokes are scripted as they flow naturally with fast-paced delivery" - Glam Adelaide.
