Heritage Hands: Raffia Basketry & Coiling Workshop with Monique Ross

Sandgate Town Hall

Discover the art of coiled basketry in this hands-on workshop with contemporary fibre artist Monique Ross, presented as part of Heritage Hands Festival – Sandgate 2026. Working with raffia, participants will explore the traditional technique of coiling and discover how simple natural fibres can be transformed into beautiful, sculptural forms. Monique will introduce foundational coiling techniques, including wrapping stitches, and guide participants through building form, texture and structure. With prepared starting pieces to help you get straight into making, this relaxed two-hour workshop offers an opportunity to slow down, work with your hands and connect traditional craftsmanship with contemporary creative practice. Suitable for beginners, with no previous basketry experience required. All materials are supplied. Places are limited and bookings are essential.
