BCUC - WOMADelaide
Botanic Park / Tainmuntilla
Self-described as "emo-indigenous Afro psychedelic fire", seven-piece Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC) are unmissable.
From humble beginnings rehearsing in a shipping container in Soweto, BCUC have emerged as a highly celebrated and politically charged group, heralding indigenous funk into a new age. With a punk ethos behind their approach to the music industry, BCUC have taken the world by storm, dancing onto the stage at Glastonbury (UK), Sziget Festival (Hungary), End of the Road (UK) and Festival Boreal (Spain). Artistic heirs to the late South African jazz musician Philip 'Malombo' Tabane and pioneering band Batsumi, their contemporary spin on ancestral traditions blends hip-hop influences with a heavy-leaning sound. Their fifth album The Road Is Never Easy takes listeners on an Afro-psychedelic journey into the soul of Soweto, like a "gospel sermon colliding with a punk concert".
