Viking Spear Workshop

Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades

Bring out your inner Viking in this full-day spear-making experience with armourer Rob Hayes. Throughout human history, the spear has been prolific in hunting, warfare and ritual. It holds a prominent place in cultural memory, from Homer's epics to the Viking sagas and Medieval legends. In this full-day workshop, you will learn to make a historical Viking or Medieval spearhead in a traditional style using traditional techniques, including heating and shaping steel by hand, forge welding, and attaching your spear tip to a staff. You will forge your spear with a blunt tip like those used at reenactment events. At the end of the workshop, you will take your spear home with you.
