Gutta Percha Workshop

Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades

Learn about an historic casting material and how to cast items from a mould. Gutta percha is derived from tree sap harvested throughout Indonesia and Malaysia and traditionally used to produce a variety of objects. In this workshop, students will explore methods used in simulating the use of gutta percha in creating and casting a mould of an old photo case, making their own family heirloom. Learn how to prepare a resin mould, how to pour their mould, and how to create a cast book cover with bound papers. At the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a bound book made from scratch using a metal binding technique.
