Navratri Garba Perth – Ratri Before Navratri | Group of Nagarsheth
Bentley Community Centre
Ratri Before Navratri is a night of live Garba and Dandiya in Perth, held on the Saturday before the Navratri festival begins.
Every Garba is sung live by Group of Nagarsheth, a Gujarati musical family that has performed Navratri Garba for over 30 years. Traditional melodies and live dhol fill Bentley Community Centre as dancers of all ages move in circles across a packed floor.
Garba is a joyful folk dance from Gujarat, performed in circles to honour the goddess Durga during Navratri. Dandiya is danced in pairs with decorated sticks. The steps are simple and repeat, so first-timers can watch for a moment and join in. Visitors of every background are welcome.
Indian street food stalls offer snacks through the evening. The night is alcohol and smoke-free and made for families, with free entry for children under five. Traditional outfits such as chaniya choli and kurta add to the colour but are not required.
