Barney Mcall: Non-Compliance and Horatio Luna
Bellingen Memorial Hall
Barney McAll is one of Australia's most visionary and uncompromising musical voices — a Grammy-nominated, ARIA-winning pianist, composer and producer based in Melbourne whose work has defied categorisation across 28 solo albums and collaborations with Gary Bartz, Roy Ayers, Maceo Parker, Dewey Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Sia, and Fred Wesley.
His 2022 album Precious Energy — recorded with the Hiatus Kaiyote rhythm section, saxophonist Julien Wilson, vocalist Rita Satch, and living legend Gary Bartz — was named Album of the Year by AllMusic, called 'a magnum opus' and 'like drowning in honey' by critics, and nominated for an ARIA, the Australian Music Prize and a Music Victoria Award. It remains one of the most celebrated Australian jazz records of the decade.
A lecturer in jazz and improvisation at the University of Melbourne, McAll approaches every performance with the focused intensity of a man who knows that music can bend reality itself.
