Open Gardens Victoria - The Winter Garden
Set on a hilltop between Arthurs Seat and Main Ridge, The Winter Garden is a remarkable two-acre landscape described by Gardens Illustrated as a joyful jewel box offering solace and nurture. Created over the past decaded by Ann-Maree and Paul Winter, the garden evolves season by season.
Richly layered garden rooms unfold across the slope, connected by gravel paths and Corten steps. Three circular lawns provide structure, while shifting combinations of colour and texture create long views and intimate spaces that reward exploration.
Planting has evolved in response to the climate, with resilient choices replacing earlier perennial borders. Ornamental grasses bring movement and light, while drought-tolerant natives including kangaroo paw, Poa and Themeda combine with hardy perennials. The garden responds beautifully to changing seasons and reflects Ann-Maree's thoughtful approach.
The latest addition is a 1,000-square-metre garden created on the former tennis court, designed by landscape architect Timothy Mitchell with Ann-Maree. Concrete slabs have been repurposed as paths and steps, a stock trough transformed into a water feature and salvaged fencing reused as arbours. A diverse native planting palette includes many unusual and rare species.
Visitors can enjoy the garden with timed-entry tickets required. Book signings, plant sales and a coffee van will be available throughout the weekend. A portion of gate takings will support Children's Ground and Southern Peninsula Community Support.
