Play Reading: An Evening of Talking Heads

Redland Performing Arts Centre

A Play Reading by Theatre Redlands - Two episodes of Talking Heads, by Alan Bennett Theatre Redlands is honoured to present rehearsed readings of two of the characters from Alan Bennett's, acclaimed Talking Heads series. A celebrated playwright, author, screenwriter, and actor, Bennett created a masterpiece with the Talking Heads monologues, reaching into the realities behind the everyday masks that we wear. The Plays A Chip in the Sugar explores dependency, relevance and the power of love – or is it obligation? A Cream Cracker under the Settee brings us headfirst into the changing nature of life, what's acceptable and what is ultimately desirable. Bennett's astute observation and analysis is tempered with the humanist empathy that makes him one of the great philosophers of the theatre. There is one performance only, featuring popular local actor Jean Spencer and visiting Tasmanian actor Brad Ashwood. Director Jan Nary. About the Play Reading This Play Reading, presented by Theatre Redlands, through intimate, self‑revealing monologues, Talking Heads explores isolation, memory, guilt and the stories people tell themselves to survive. Each character speaks alone, but collectively the pieces form a poignant portrait of lives lived on the margins of attention, rendered with Bennett's signature wit and compassion.
