The lake contains a pink hue created by the presence of carotenoid-producing algae Dunaliella salina, a source of ß-carotene, a food-colouring agent, and a source of vitamin A. The Pink Lake is approximately 70 square kilometres with most of it lying a few metres below sea level and fed by marine waters through springs. After circling the lake head back along the coast and over the town to the airport.
