Perth, Perth, Western Australia
Surrender yourself to the South West. The salty spray of waves and towering forests awaken the senses, while premium wines and exquisite local produce provide ever-lasting appreciation for the bounty of land and sea. Sit back on a four-day, 756-kilometre jaunt through spectacular scenery and world-class wine country. Starting from Perth’s thriving metropolis, you can head to the South West one of two ways: via historic Mundijong or Harvey, which provides a delectable entrée to what lies ahead. You’ll find all sorts of artisans hiding in the hills of the Ferguson Valley, an award-winning wine region characterised by small-batch wines and family-run producers. Let Bunbury bewitch you with its cosmopolitan cafes and bespoke boutiques, then head to the shore to say hello to the town’s most popular locals, the wild bottlenose dolphins. Next, breathe in the warm coastal charm of Busselton, work up an appetite on a gentle stroll of its 1.8-kilometre jetty, and admire the calm waters of Dunsborough. Internationally acclaimed Margaret River is as famous for its soil as it is for its surf breaks and immaculate beaches – the geography and micro-climate of the region contributing to elegant wines such as chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. Sample these award-winning varietals at more than 100 cellar doors, before settling in for an evening of fine dining. Thirsty for more? Revel in the blissful surrounds, hike, swim, or simply soak up some rays. Pemberton – home to fine cool-climate wineries and famous for its marron, a delicate-tasting freshwater crayfish – invites you to explore towering Karri forests. Beedelup Falls is a peaceful interlude of rushing water tumbling over granite. This odyssey culminates in Manjimup, where giant Karri trees stand guard, cool-climate wines abound, and a special delicacy lies beneath the ground – prized black Perigord truffles....
Get your first taste of South West cheese, wine and fresh produce by heading for the harvest town of Harvey. Follow the Kwinana Freeway from Perth to the Forrest Highway and take the Harvey turnoff. Or enjoy a leisurely country drive from Mundijong on the South Western Highway. From Harvey, it’s just a 30-minute drive to the vibrant port town of Bunbury and its award-winning wine region, the Ferguson Valley. Take a self-guided tour of its arts, wine and food trail and stop for lunch overlooking the vineyards and tuart forests, or check out from Bunbury’s cafes and restaurants beside Koombana Bay – home to more than 100 bottlenose dolphins. For your overnight stay, choose from well-appointed beachfront resorts, city motels, budget-friendly chalets, caravan parks and backpackers.
Hug the coastline of Geographe Bay along the Bussell Highway, passing the seaside towns of Busselton and Dunsborough before the final stretch to Margaret River along Caves Road. This puts you right at the heart of one of Australia’s largest wine regions and most diverse holiday destinations. Take your pick from over 100 wineries, as well as fine restaurants, boutique breweries, art galleries, fresh produce stores and a huge variety of accommodation options, from luxury retreats and private beach houses to motels and camping grounds.
Follow Caves Road south, and take the Brockman and Vasse Highway, heading deep into karri tree country to reach the old timber milling town of Pemberton. Be sure to stop by Nannup, also known as 'The Garden Village' on your way down. Spend your afternoon sampling some of WA’s top cool-climate wineries – the perfect accompaniment to a lunch or dinner of fresh local flavours, including Pemberton’s finest delicacy, marron. Stay overnight at a local winery, forest retreat, guesthouse or caravan park.
Heading north via the Vasse Highway and South Western Highway, you’ll reach Manjimup in just under 30 minutes. Here, you can get a taste of the sensation that’s coveted by top chefs the world over – Western Australian black truffles – as well as a few more cool climate wines. Pick up some wine and gourmet treats for dinner and make your way back to Perth via Bunbury and the Forrest Highway (approximately three hours and 20 minutes).
