Start at Tewantin before you head to Pomona and on to Kin Kin before finishing in Gympie. You'll cover just over 70 kilometres but take your time, sit by the lake, watch an old movie, wandering through a charming town and fossick for some treasures. There's absolutely no rush there....

  Majestic Lake MacDonald holds a very special secret: a Greek-style outdoor amphitheatre which provides a beautiful setting for opera performances. Explore the theatre or make your way to the Botanic Gardens to see a variety of native plants. Birdwatchers are also in for a treat with the lush gardens home to abundant with bird life. The lake itself provides a tranquil setting for a picnic, or perhaps a spot of fishing.

• Pomona to Kin Kin

  This tiny Queensland town has a very big claim to fame. The Majestic Cinema is the oldest continuously running silent movie cinema in the world, and transports visitors back in time to the age prior to 'talkies'. The cinema shows a variety of silent films accompanied by a live pipe organ. When it's not featuring silent films, there are live performances in this charming space.

• Kin Kin to Gympie

  Kin Kin is best known for its art scene and great food, and the drive here will give you a feel for the wonderful scenery surrounding the area. If you happen to be driving through Kin Kin on the first Sunday of the month, make sure you stop off at the Creations Markets at Memorial Hall, Main Street. You can check out the various stalls from 10am to 2pm boasting an array of wares including jewellery and knick-knacks, plus fresh produce. From Kin Kin, drive to Deep Creek, about four kilometres away from Gympie, where you can experience the gold rush era. Alluvial gold was discovered near the Mary River in 1867, and today, visitors can roll up their sleeves and strike it rich by fossicking for gold at this tourist hot-spot on Counter Street. Fossicking permits are required, so make sure you visit the Cooloola Region Information Centre on the Bruce Highway (Pacific Coast Way) beforehand.
